An AI coding assistant sits in your editor or terminal and helps you write, explain, refactor and debug code. Some only autocomplete the next line. Others can open files, run tests and finish a whole task (that is agent mode).

It depends on the surface. Gemini CLI and Continue.dev (with your own key or a local model) cost $0 for the app. GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Windsurf offer limited free tiers. Cline and Aider are open source — you only pay the model API, or nothing if you run Ollama locally.
Copilot is cheaper ($10/mo Pro), works inside the editor you already use and is the safest default for teams on GitHub. Cursor is a full AI IDE (~$20/mo) with a stronger agent/composer workflow for multi-file refactors. Try Copilot first if you do not want to switch editors.
Bring Your Own Key. The coding tool is free; you paste an API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or a local server. You pay per token to that provider. Use the AI Cost Calculator on this site to estimate that bill.
Autocomplete suggests the next line. Agent mode can plan a change, edit several files, run commands and loop on errors. Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code, Cline and Copilot all offer some form of agent. Quality and how much you can steer them still differ.
Policies differ. Business/enterprise plans usually offer no-training and data-retention controls. Open-source BYOK tools only send code to the model provider you chose (or nowhere, if the model is local). Read the vendor privacy page before pasting secrets or proprietary repos.
