Lossy vs Lossless Image Compression: Explained with Real Numbers

What lossy and lossless compression really do to your images, how much each one saves, when quality loss becomes visible — and how to pick per use case.

Every image tool talks about "lossy" and "lossless" — but what actually happens to your file? Five minutes here will save you from blurry photos and bloated libraries forever.

The core difference

  • Lossless compression is a perfect zip: the decompressed image is bit-for-bit identical to the original. Smaller file, zero quality loss — but limited savings (typically 10–50%).
  • Lossy compression is smarter but destructive: it discards detail the human eye barely notices, then compresses what remains. Savings of 60–95% — at the cost of information you can never get back.

Why lossy looks "identical" (until it doesn't)

Lossy algorithms exploit the limits of human vision: we perceive brightness more sharply than color, and smooth gradients more than tiny texture. So they throw away color precision and micro-texture first. At quality 85–90, almost nobody can tell the difference on a photo.

The trouble starts with:

  • Multiple re-compressions — save a JPG at 70%, then again, then again: artifacts accumulate with each generation;
  • Sharp edges and text — screenshots and logos show fuzz and "ghosting" quickly;
  • Heavy crops and zooms — discarded detail becomes visible when you enlarge.

The golden rule: keep a lossless original; export lossy copies for use. Need a bigger size or better quality later? You re-export from the original — you never "upgrade" a lossy file.

Notice the pattern: the first 90% of savings is nearly free. The last 10% is where quality dies.
