Every image tool talks about "lossy" and "lossless" — but what actually happens to your file? Five minutes here will save you from blurry photos and bloated libraries forever.

Lossy algorithms exploit the limits of human vision: we perceive brightness more sharply than color, and smooth gradients more than tiny texture. So they throw away color precision and micro-texture first. At quality 85–90, almost nobody can tell the difference on a photo.

The golden rule: keep a lossless original; export lossy copies for use. Need a bigger size or better quality later? You re-export from the original — you never "upgrade" a lossy file.

Notice the pattern: the first 90% of savings is nearly free. The last 10% is where quality dies.

Lossless = archive and master copies. Lossy = everything you publish, send or display — once, from the original, at quality 80–90. Follow that rule and you will never see an ugly JPEG artifact again.
